Decoded Sleep exists because generic sleep advice leaves too many people stuck. Cut your caffeine, dim the lights, keep a consistent bedtime. It is all reasonable guidance, and none of it explains why two people can follow the exact same routine and end up with completely different results. The missing piece, more often than most people realize, is biology, and specifically, genetics.
Our tagline sums up what we are trying to do here: understand your genetics, sleep better. We built this site around the idea that sleep is not one-size-fits-all, and that the more precisely you understand your own circadian rhythm, your neurochemistry, and your inherited tendencies, the more precisely you can act on that information, rather than guessing your way through advice that was never designed with your specific biology in mind.
Why We Started This Site
Most sleep content online treats sleep as a single, universal problem with a single set of universal fixes. We think that approach undersells how much individual variation actually matters. Two people with identical bedtimes and identical bedrooms can have meaningfully different sleep experiences because of differences in their melatonin pathways, their natural chronotype, or how their bodies process specific nutrients. We started Decoded Sleep to bring that layer of personal biology into the conversation, rather than leaving it out entirely.
What You Will Find Here
Our content is organized around a handful of core themes, each approaching sleep from a slightly different angle:
Sleep genetics foundations and circadian rhythm and clock genes, covering the basic biology of how your internal clock works and how your genes shape it.
Sleep neurochemistry, looking at the roles serotonin, melatonin, and GABA play in helping you fall and stay asleep.
Genetic risk and sleep disorders, exploring what research says about inherited tendencies toward conditions like insomnia, restless legs syndrome, and sleep apnea.
Nutrients, supplements, and sleep biology, unpacking the science behind ingredients commonly used to support sleep, including magnesium, tart cherry, tryptophan, and lemon balm.
Chronotype and personalized sleep strategy, along with sleep hygiene and environment, translating biological understanding into practical, everyday adjustments.
DNA testing guides and comparisons, walking through what at-home genetic testing actually involves, how accurate it is, and how to make sense of your results.
Sleep through life, covering how sleep and its genetic underpinnings shift across different ages, hormonal stages, and life circumstances, from adolescence through older adulthood.
Across all of these categories, our goal is the same: to explain the biology clearly, honestly, and without oversimplifying, so you can make more informed decisions about your own sleep.
Our Approach
We try to hold two things at once in everything we publish. First, genetics matters, and understanding your own tendencies, whether through a DNA test or simply learning how these systems work in general, gives you a more accurate starting point than generic advice alone. Second, genetics is not destiny. Sleep is influenced by a mix of inherited tendencies and everyday choices, and we aim to be honest about that balance rather than overstating what any single gene or test result can tell you. Where the science is well established, we say so. Where it is still emerging or debated, we say that too.
Products We Discuss
Throughout the site, you will see references to two products that align with the biology we write about: SelfDecode, an at-home DNA testing service offering individual reports and bundles related to sleep genetics, and Performance Lab Sleep, a nighttime supplement built around magnesium, tart cherry, L-tryptophan, and lemon balm extract. We reference these products because they connect directly to the mechanisms and genetic tendencies discussed in our articles, not because they are the only options available. Readers are always encouraged to do their own research and to consult a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement or making decisions based on genetic testing results.
Affiliate Disclosure
Decoded Sleep is supported through affiliate relationships. This means that if you click certain links on this site and make a purchase, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. This support helps us continue researching and publishing content. Our affiliate relationships do not influence the accuracy of the information we present, and we make every effort to represent the underlying science fairly, regardless of whether a given article ultimately mentions a product we have a relationship with.
A Note on Medical Information

Sleep concerns, especially anything involving diagnosed or suspected sleep disorders, hormonal changes, medications, or the health of a child, should always be discussed directly with a doctor or other qualified professional.
